If you fail to plan

It’s awfully easy to let life happen to you. There are usually plenty of things to do and people to talk to on a college campus. There are professors to tell you when to write which paper and what content will be on the exam. There are advisors who will tell you how many classes you need to take to graduate and which requirements you are missing. Allowing others to take responsibility for you and for your future probably feels like a pretty natural extension of your childhood when teachers and parents orchestrated your days. It’s easy and safe. Unfortunately, the safe easy path rarely leads to greatness.

College should be time when you are learning to take more of that responsibility on yourself. It should be a time when you are starting to formulate a plan detailing who you want to be and how you will become that person. When you have a vision for your future and commit fully to achieving that vision, you can confidently plan your first steps in your journey toward becoming who you want to be and get underway. Without a plan, you are likely to continue to let life happen to you, but unlikely to accomplish your grander ambitions. Dreams without plans are little more than fantasy. As you become more aware of the power you have over your own destiny and the responsibility you have for exercising that power, you will also become empowered to set and follow a plan which will lead you there.
